The cast of Marvel's Runaways have spoken about how the "ballsy" season one finale set the scene for an even more epic second season.

Speaking to Digital Spy, cast members Virginia Gardner, Rhenzy Feliz, Kip Pardue, Greg Sulkin, Ariela Barer, Julian McMahon and James Marsters said that the first season couldn't have ended more perfectly, with the Runaways finally becoming runaways... and hinted at where season two begins.

On the set of the show's second season, Gardner (Karolina Dean), told DS: "I felt very excited by the way the first season ended even though we didn't know, at that time, if there was going to be a second season."

Feliz, who plays Alex Wilder, added: "The way it leaves it open genuinely has you wanting a season two. When I read the last episode for the first time, it left me hungry for what's to come. It gives you a very good idea of what could happen, all the possibilities, so when I did get the call to say that we'd been renewed, I was ready."

Meanwhile, Marsters (Victor Stein) didn't hold back, stating: "I think they were just ballsy and assumed they were going to get a second season, so they just wrote it as if that was a given."

"The end of season one asks as many questions as it answers," explained Pardue, who plays Frank Dean. "It does answer some, fans will be satisfied, but it poses a whole bunch more, which is great. That's exactly what you want."

Sulkin (Chase Stein) told us that getting a call for season two "was a blessing" because, in his opinion, "as the first season ended, the train was just leaving the station".

"We hadn’t even got into the really good stuff yet. I thought the first season was great and we all gave it 150% but we wanted to go again," he added.

Barer, who plays telepath Gertrude 'Gert' Yorkes, continued: "I think, speaking as a fan of what we're doing, and also as an actor on the show, it's really great that we had a whole, entire season to really dive into these characters. You don't often get that opportunity."

"Because of that, it's all the more emotionally impactful and compelling and there's so much more at stake. We knew that after one season we couldn't abandon these characters, there was just no way," she said.

McMahon, aka Jonah, mused: "Well, I'm not going to tell you that I'm not happy to be here. The first season ended in a very open way so the possibilities were endless. You don't want to finalise things with a show like this.

"They could have turned around with season two and done pretty much whatever they wanted but we pick up pretty quickly after the end of season one."

Marvel's Runaways returns to Syfy UK on January 2.
