Nearly fifty years later, it is has become a cultural phenomenon, spawning twelve films, five television series, novels, and comics. Throughout its incarnations, Star Trek can be seen as a cultural mirror, echoing the issues of the human race through the plot of the show. Issues of xenophobia, cultural contamination, and linguistics all factor heavily in each series, but especially in Star Trek: The Next Generation. This panel will examine the role of anthropology in The Next Generation and what we can learn from the example that Gene Roddenberry created for us.
