Leverage: Redemption: James Marsters Is a Cunning Con Man in Golf Spikes in First Look at IMDb TV Revival

Leverage Marsters IMDB tv

James Marsters will be looking to sink his teeth into some wealthy marks when he guest-stars on IMDb TV’s Leverage revival — and TVLine has an exclusive first look at his villainous visit.

In Leverage: Redemption, which is currently filming in New Orleans, the rich and powerful take what they want — and the Leverage team is back to take them down. Grifter Sophie Devereaux (played by Gina Bellman), thief Parker (Beth Riesgraf), hitter Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane) and hacker Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge) all have watched the world change over the years since the original TNT caper drama ended. In that time, it has become easier – and sometimes legal — for the rich to become richer and the powerful to squash anyone who gets in their way.

Sadly down one team member, they find new blood in Harry Wilson (Falling Skies‘ Noah Wyle), a corporate lawyer who is looking for redemption after realizing he’d been sitting on the wrong side of the table for his entire career, and Breanna Casey (Aleyse Shannon of The CW’s Charmed), Hardison’s foster sister who has a knack for computers, robotics… and getting into trouble.

As seen in the exclusive photo below, Christian Kane’s Eliot will attempt to thwart foul play on the fairway when Marsters (Buffy/Angel, Runaways) guest-stars as Carl, a slick country club hustler who uses his conning of wealthy members to fund a much darker criminal enterprise.

Jamie's note #1: James' episode (in which he plays Carl, "a slick country club hustler who uses his conning of wealthy members to fund a much darker criminal enterprise") is now confirmed to be #1.12 "The Golf Job," which will be the fourth episode of 1B.

Jamie's note #2: The article below states you can 'Watch Kane & Marsters get punchy towards the end of this trailer,' however, it is clearly not James in the trailer, so I think they've confused him with someone else. And given how gung-ho both James & Christian are about doing their own stunts, I don't think it's a stunt double for James either. But I could be wrong as James did have knee surgery around abouts the time of filming this. Either way it's definitely not James in the trailer, which you can confirm for yourself by clicking the screencaps below of definitely-not-James (I'm quite certain that isn't his name, but for my purposes it'll do):

Leverage's Christian Kane Teases Angel-ic Reunion With James Marsters: 'We May Have Dropped Easter Eggs'

Two Angel alumni had a devil of a time when they reunited on IMDb TV’s Leverage: Redemption.

As TVLine exclusively reported a while back, Christian Kane’s Eliot will aim to thwart foul play on the fairway when James Marsters guest-stars as Carl, a slick country club hustler who uses his conning of wealthy members to fund a much darker criminal enterprise.

“We may have dropped a couple of Easter eggs in there for the [Angel] fans, man, to be honest with you…,” Kane teased for TVLine.

Marsters specifically appears in “The Golf Job,” which is the fourth of the eight new episodes being released on Friday, Oct. 8, thus concluding the revival’s 16-episode freshman run.

Kane said that Marsters was “a bit wary” of traveling to New Orleans during the middle throes of the pandemic, so he and Leverage newcomer Noah Wyle, who directed the episode (and previously did a play with Marsters), hopped on the phone together to tender the offer.

“He said yes, and it made our day,” Kane recalled. “It was so fun, because he’s been a dear friend of mine — one of my first friends in Hollywood.”

“Everybody’s so scared of Spike, this scary vampire, but in real life James is one of the biggest pussycats you’ve ever seen,” Kane added. “He’s just a cool, cool guy, and such a nice guy at heart.”

Kane promised that those in the Angel/Leverage Venn diagram are “going to get a kick out of this” reunion, even though he and Marsters are playing different characters. That said, “there are going to be a lot of times where you’re looking at Spike and Lindsey.

“You’re always looking for Spike to go after Lindsey, and vice versa. We were always trying to kill each other,” he noted of the Angel duo’s dynamic. “And we did that this time really, really subtly, with different hats on.”

TOWARD THE END OF THIS NEW TRAILER

Other guest stars on tap for Leverage: Redemption Episodes 9-16 include Gotham alum Drew Powell (reprising his role as Jack Hurley from TNT’s original Leverage series), LeVar Burton (Star Trek: TNG, watch a sneak peek), Ben Thompson (Coronation Street), Joanna Cassidy (Body of Proof), Jon Fletcher (The Messengers), Brianna Brown (Devious Maids) and Andrea Navedo (Jane the Virgin), the latter of whom will continue her arc as U.S. Marshal Maria Shipp.

IMDb TV is Amazon’s free streaming service, on which you also can currently watch the original Leverage series.

‘Leverage: Redemption’: Christian Kane Teases ‘Angel’ Reunion With James Marsters

Leverage Redemption Christian Kane James Marsters Revival
Preview
Alfonso Bresciani / IMDb TV

If you were an Angel fan back in the late ’90s and early ’00s, you knew Christian Kane as lawyer Lindsey McDonald and James Marsters as vampire Spike. And when you watch the back half of Leverage: Redemption in the fall, you’ll see them onscreen together again.

“It’s funny because I asked James to come in and do the [Leverage: Redemption] pilot with us and he was — I don’t think he’s going to be upset — like everyone, really wary of COVID at the time,” Kane tells TV Insider of his former costar on The WB series, which ran from 1999 to 2004.

“So finally, when [this role] came up, me and [costar Noah Wyle, who also directed the episode] were talking about it… and he said, ‘Who do we got?’ He had worked with James before. Obviously, I’ve known James almost my whole life in Hollywood. And I called him and I said, ‘How do you feel?’ And he’s like, ‘I got a big bubble mask, man. I can get on a plane.’ So we flew him in and it was just so much fun.”

On the IMDb TV revival of the crime drama Leverage (which ran five seasons from 2008 to 2012), Kane reprises his role as hitter Eliot Spencer. Marsters is coming in as a guest star, playing Carl, who cons wealthy country club members to fund a dark criminal enterprise.

“It was a different sort of animosity because usually it’s Spike and Lindsey and I’m trying to kill him and stick a stake through his heart and he’s trying to bite me,” Kane quips. “And it’s really not that different. It’s just way more subtle in that episode.

“It was really fun working with one of my oldest friends in Hollywood. People see Spike and they’re so scared of him when James himself is one of the sweetest, most talented actors. He brings so much to this character. It was just so much fun. We sat there and told war stories, played guitar together. It was really great to have him in, and I think the fans are absolutely gonna love it. They’re really gonna love seeing Spike and Lindsey go at it again, wearing different hats.”

Executive producer Dean Devlin agrees, but he’s hesitant to give away anything about the episode itself. “I think the fans are going to freak out seeing these two guys onscreen together again. It’s so much fun and of course, because of their history, they immediately have a chemistry,” he teases. “I think when people see that episode, if you are a fan of Angel, you’re gonna flip out.”
