Back in the day, James Marsters' old official websites used to post a monthly Q&A session with James, & I'm reposting those Q&As every week for a bit of fun (& nostalgia)! Enjoy this week's Q&A from November 2006:

Is there any living creature (mammal, reptile, insect, fish, etc.) that just completely gives you the willies?
The Tasmanian devil. Their cries in the night will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and leap off your neck. They have very powerful jaws and the sounds of them breaking bone from the carcass of their kill can literally be heard for miles.

When Clark was telling Professor Fine about his suspicions about the sorority girls, Fine says….”But Clark, there is no such thing as vampires.” Was that written by the Smallville writers as a special homage to Spike?
That was written by Steve DeKnight, for christsakes, who should have more dignity.

Why did the guitar become your instrument of choice to learn?
It was my father’s.

You’ve said that acting is not so much putting on a mask but rather a process of selecting facets of one’s own personality that fit the character, which is much more revealing and truthful. What pieces of yourself do you feel are applicable to be Macbeth?
Force of will, impatience, and ruthlessness. But we all have those.

Spam or bologna?
Spam (Steve says ‘owww, you are white trash!’)

Favorite:
Halloween costume growing up? – Hmmmm, Super Monkey Man. I had an ape mask that fit all around my head and it had artificial hair. Planet of the Apes was out and I was all about the monkey. I terrorized my neighborhood that night.
Indulgence that you have now that you weren’t able to have before you were famous? – A swimming pool, a great guitar and every video game that looks interesting.

October 2006

You’ve talked about what led to your leaving New York and going to Chicago, but why did you leave Chicago and go to Seattle?
Because I didn’t want to die in Chicago; it’s too cold. I know that I wouldn’t have died for a long time, but old age in Chicago would be hard.

Who or what makes you nervous?
Having to audition when I know I’m not right for the role, that’s awkward. Not much actually. Maybe I should be more engaged and more nervous about things. Maybe I’m a closet Buddhist or trying to be.

The American Express quiz:
Childhood ambition – actor
Fondest memory – birth of my son
Soundtrack – Miles Davis View From a Lift
Retreat – never retreat
Wildest dream – to produce Macbeth for the screen
Proudest moment – birth of my son
Biggest challenge – parenting
Alarm clock – the simpler the better. I have a Big Ben Twilight
First job – dishwasher
Indulgence – beef jerky
Last purchase – gas
Favorite movie – Singing in the Rain
Inspiration – my kids
My life – is not complete

What kind of coffee do you like when you can choose?
Espresso. The darker the roast, the stronger you can make it.

This question relates to a scene in Macbeth: a physician tells him Lady M has gone mad. Macbeth then asks him, “canst thou not minister to a mind diseased?” Would you interpret this as his asking the physician to have her painlessly killed to avoid further suffering?
HELL NO! Macbeth is desperately trying to save his wife. He knows he is driving her insane and he is really just beating up on the doctor for not being a psychiatrist.

What has been the greatest compliment you’ve received during your acting career and who gave it to you?
A 13 year-old girl who thought that a Beckett one act I did called Ohio Impromptu was an exciting play. Beckett is very difficult to make exciting.

July 2006

How did you get that little scar on your chin?
The truth is I don’t remember. Someone probably hit me with something between 1985-1988 and he probably won the fight and hit me really hard. I don’t remember.

What is your least favorite:
Color – I love all color
Sight – Human cruelty
Smell or scent – Rotten meat
Taste or flavor or spice – The piece of candy corn that pushes me over the mountain of sugar rush into the chasm of nausea; worse than that is the 40 I eat after that!
Food – Boiled lima beans. I ate too many before the age of 18. I’ve never had one since.
Thing to feel (touch) – A chalk board
Thing to feel (emotion) – Fear
Time of day – Morning! Morning! Morning!
Month – There are only twelve of them so I can’t be that picky. I love them all.
Word or expression – ‘for your information’ and ‘didn’t you get the memo’
Chore, thing to do which has to be done anyway – Watching the President’s speeches

How would you describe your character in Shadow Puppets? Is this movie based on a novel?

He is intelligent, terrified and although you wouldn’t first suspect, love-struck. It is an original concept.

Now that some time has passed, what do you miss about Buffy and Angel?
I miss the way I walk in a long, black coat. If you walk that way without a long, black coat you look a little silly.

What would the music be like for the Macbeth movie you are planning?
Hmmm, ummmm, uhhh… low orchestral, traditional Celtic war music and synthesized screeching in the chilly parts. It would be a horror film – I think one of the best horror stories ever told. Make no mistake, it is a slasher film.

What song(s), artist(s), or both get you in that place where you can just close your eyes, put your head back, and let the world fall away – when you let yourself be totally absorbed by the music?
I don’t listen repeatedly to music unless it can cast a spell like that. I’ve mentioned in the past Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits – to that I would add, in a very different way, Ry Cooder, and especially recommend an album he produced in Cuba called Buena Vista Social Club. It’s not a new album, but widely available and absolute magic.

If you were going to ’sell’ only one of your favorite musicians to someone who’d never heard of him/her, which musician would it be and what would you say to convince that person to listen?
Nick Drake and his album Pink Moon. Nick died weeks after recording it and it truly sounds like it’s too beautiful for this world.

In your opinion, what are the three most important emotional characteristics you need in a friend?
Forgiveness, truthfulness, and patience.
