NYCC 2019: The cast of Angel reunites in New York

Contributed by SYFY WIRE Staff
Oct 6, 2019

15 years ago, Angel came to an abrupt end after five seasons on The WB. The spinoff of Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer left a lasting impression on fans and the cast of the series. At this year's New York Comic Con, Charisma Carpenter, Alexis Denisof, J. August Richards, Amy Acker, and James Marsters held an Angel reunion on the SYFY WIRE Live Stage.

According to the cast, this is the first time in years that so many of them were in one place. Denisof and Marsters told us that they recently bonded over becoming parents in the intervening years. However, Acker had a more amusing story about a bad experience the cast had while shooting one night in Los Angeles.

"I think we were all talking about how we remember shooting in dark alleys in downtown L.A. before downtown L.A. was cool," recalled Acker. "One particular evening we were recalling was when from a second story window, a cup of pee got dropped on us."

"It was loud," added Carpenter. "There were big glaring lights and we're disrupting their sleep at four in the morning shooting our vampire show. They felt a certain kind of way about it. We're not sure how much [pee] it was, but it felt like more. It certainly smelled like more."

While the show's story continued in comics, only Marsters took an active hand in shaping new stories for his character, Spike. He told us how he came up with a different take on a vampire with a soul to separate Spike's experience from Angel; which was turned into a comic.

How that Avengers shawarma scene was actually inspired by heartbreaking Angel death

October 05, 2019 at 03:59 PM EDT

Remember that hilarious Avengers post-credits scene where all the superheroes are sitting in silence eating shawarma after the Battle of New York? It turns out that was actually inspired by an earlier Joss Whedon project.

When the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off series Angel stopped by EW’s video suite at New York Comic Con on Saturday for the show’s 20th anniversary reunion, Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker revealed that beloved character Fred’s death had an unexpected and far-reaching influence.

“That was intense,” Denisof says of filming Acker’s heartbreaking death scene. “I remember Joss particularly wanted to direct that. He gave us an amazing atmosphere. He more or less cleared the set to just him, the camera operator, and you and me.”

And that’s when Acker revealed some surprising intel on how Angel ended up inspiring the first Avengers movie. “I just remember that at the end of the day we all went for a drink and were sitting in a bar and none of us spoke to each other,” she says. “Apparently the shawarma scene at the end of Avengers was inspired by us just sitting there not talking.”

“Just shells, completely,” Denisof adds with a laugh.

Check out our full interview with the cast above to hear hilarious and heartwarming stories about all the stars’ first days on set of Angel and more.

Angel cast and creators reunite for 20th anniversary of beloved vampire drama series

In the City of Angels, the sun is shining brightly on Good Friday. But beyond a heavy black door, away from harsh light, vampires, demons, and a rogue demon hunter or two gather in the darkness of an abandoned warehouse.

Okay, so the Hollywood studio that’s serving as the location for EW’s Angel reunion shoot isn’t actually a warehouse, nor a meeting place for the undead. Rather, the cast of the WB drama is very human, and expressing very human levels of excitement at being together again, 20 years after their show debuted.

“It’s good to see everybody!” says David Boreanaz, 50, the show’s titular vampire who, upon arrival, immediately makes a beeline for the dressing room to find his costars. Spotting Charisma Carpenter (shallow cheerleader-turned-champion Cordelia) and Amy Acker (shy Texan physicist Winifred “Fred” Burkle) in makeup chairs, he plops himself on the counter and sits, legs swinging giddily, catching up with them while they’re curled and coiffed. “Look at that smile,” he says, gesturing to Carpenter with affection. “We just picked up where we were last time we talked to each other.” Speaking of picking up, Acker, 42, enjoyed the series’ experience so much, she has already declared she’d be ready for a revival, which would be season 6. “Every show should be this fun,” she says. “We were so spoiled.”
