Back in the day, James Marsters' old official websites used to post a monthly Q&A session with James, & I'm reposting those Q&As every week for a bit of fun (& nostalgia)! Only a couple if these babies left to post! Enjoy this week's Q&A from January 2011:

January 2011

If you were forced to, who would you want to trade places with for 24 hours?
(Laughs.) Nobody, nobody. I wouldn’t trade places with one human being for one second.

Having run your own theater, you’ve come up against the conflict of arts promotion vs financial viability. Having had to promote both agendas at once, which do you feel drives the creative spirit at the end of the day?
They must be the same. Moliere and Shakespeare realized this. You have to grab the audience by the throat and if you have something important to say, once you have them by the throat they’ll listen. But they have to be your slaves – there should be zero difference between a theme that is important and true and that which is commercially viable. One should lead to the other. A great artist can take a great theme, whether it’s pain or wisdom or whatever and they make it so exciting to watch, that is art. I remember trying to sell “Life is a Dream” a 500 year old play in verse from Spain and nobody knew it, but it’s better than Hamlet. And I sold it as a sex romp. I got full houses on a 500 year old play.

Was there a teacher or teachers that made a difference in your life?
Mrs. Barr. She was my senior English teacher in high school and she was BRUTAL about teaching us the language. She made us learn words and to this day I have a good command of the language because of all the words that she taught me. There was an 8th grade math teacher who was a total hippie. He had long hair and a beard and I thought he was the coolest guy on earth. I was not good in math but he made it fun. My high school chemistry teacher was the first person I’d met who was part of the actor’s union and he took pity on me. By that time I was getting known as an interesting young actor and he forgave me my weakness in science and sheperded me through chemistry. Mr. Stewart was his name.

What talent do you wish you had?
Wow…uhm. Fencing! (laughs) I don’t know. I have all the talents I want. I’m blessed.

If Capt. John Hart and Spike ever crossed paths, what do you think the outcome would be?
Wild homosexual sex! Because Spike hasn’t had homosexual sex in like 100 years, and Captain John is so sexy, you know?

In P.S. I Love You, where she’s contemplating on what kind of career she should go into, one of her choices was being a ‘Vampire Slayer’, was that added in there because you were on Buffy or did it have nothing to do with you being on the show?
(Laughs) It had zero to do with my being there. I was just along for the ride on that one. I was just taking notes.

Favorites:

Star Trek character? Spock! I told Joss when I got on Buffy that I wanted to be the Spock of Buffy. There’s only one letter of difference, man! I wanted to be the side character that is interesting, and takes the theme and turns it on its head so you can re-examine it from a different angle.

Album from your youth? Hmmm…Tom Petty – Damn the Torpedoes.

Back in the day, James Marsters' old official websites used to post a monthly Q&A session with James, & I'm reposting those Q&As every week for a bit of fun (& nostalgia)! Enjoy this week's Q&A from September 2008:

September 2008

Buffy and Spike’s "bring down the house" sex scene was recently voted TV Guide’s number one hot scene in television history. Your opinion on that?
It was pretty fun! My memory of it was that the stunt coordinator took 50 lbs of pointed metal to the face that night, so we all ended up in the hospital at the end of that night.

What bores you?
Local television news.

What is on your refrigerator door?
I’ll go check (he laughs)…there’s nothing on the refrigerator door here. My nanny doesn’t want us to blemish it.

After playing and performing a song multiple times, does it become routine? Or do you find yourself being drawn back to the situation that inspired the song and begin to feel the emotions all over again?
I feel it all over again. I have to be careful not to get teary eyed – it’s terrible for the voice.

Do you think John Hart is a good man or a bad man?
He’s a bad man trying to be good.

How would you describe the perfect first kiss?
Relaxed lips, long and mushy, and just a little bit of tongue.

Either/Or
Sir Ian McKellen or Sir Anthony Hopkins?
I refuse to choose!

Favorites:
Vegetable – edamame
Places in California – The poppy fields outside of Santa Maria, CA; Big Sur; Humboldt County where the redwoods are.

UPDATED 21/12/19 with preview, synopses for all 4 stories & cast list.

@bigfinish Preview )

About

From zombies in Restoration London, to Hell gatecrashing a funeral, rogue Time Agent Captain John Hart leads the universe to rack and ruin in four new adventures written by David Llewellyn.

1. The Restored

Captain John is in Restoration England looking for some gauntlets. There's intrigue in the Tower of London, the dead are walking the streets, and the severed head of Oliver Cromwell has a terrible warning.

2. Escape from Nebazz

Captain John is in a wooden space prison that's under attack by a strange and terrible life form. Also the catering is truly dreadful and Dr Magpie's latest discover may have got a little out of hand.

3. Peach Blossom Heights

Captains John and Jack find themselves stranded on a world that may be actual paradise - the weather is pleasant, the people are friendly, and the giant stuffed animals only come out at night. There's only one thing the world is missing. No-one has ever explained to any of the population about the birds and the bees. Which is unfortunate.

4. Darker Purposes

Captain John arrives at the funeral of one of the galaxy's richest men. He died without making a will, and his heirs have some very creative ideas about how this can be put to rights involving murder, necromancy and seduction. Sadly, Captain John is only too happy to oblige.

Captain John returns

20 December 2018

James Marsters, the star of cult television shows Buffy, Angel, Smallville and recent hit Runaways, reprises the role of Captain John Hart for his own adventures in the Torchwood audio universe.

The rambunctious, deadly and ever-so charming captain will be back at the helm in a new four-story box set, The Sins of Captain John, created by Big Finish Productions in association with BBC Studios.

Captain John Hart made his audio debut in The Death of Captain Jack, released in March 2018. In this story he killed the entire Torchwood team – including John Barrowman’s supposedly immortal Captain Jack Harkness. He also married Queen Victoria and had no less than three ‘relationships’ with characters from history. Who knows what he’ll get up to in this next box set of adventures!

James Marsters told us about returning to the role, and the world of Torchwood, “Doing The Death of Captain Jack was incredible! I have missed doing Torchwood so much. Beyond being proud of playing a part in it, the character itself is a blast to play, and those two episodes just weren’t enough.”

Set for release in January 2020, The Sins of Captain John will see Captain John Hart leading the universe into rack and ruin in four new adventures…

The Restored
Escape from Nebazz
Peach Blossom Heights
Darker Purposes

In these stories we’ll find the villainous anti-hero thriving in Restoration London, exploring gas planets, playing ‘Stepford wife' and kissing (then killing) countless victims… Just a day in the life of a rogue Time Agent!

Writer, David Llewellyn, tells us what to expect: “Writing The Death of Captain Jack was a total blast, and both James Goss (producer of the Torchwood range) and I realised we could have a lot more fun with Captain John Hart, providing James Marsters was happy to return.

“Captain John is this chaotic, disruptive, insubordinate force of nature; completely amoral and unpredictable, so that gave me a lot of freedom! Writing is often a case of knowing when to hold back, when to tread a more subtle line, but with Captain John it’s the complete opposite. And setting it before Torchwood on television meant we were able to go to places where Torchwood can’t.”

Torchwood fans will also find answers to some of the questions and plot points that have so far been left hanging from the beginning of the television show. More details on this in the future...

The Sins of Captain John, out for release in January 2020, is available for pre-order from Big Finish at £28 on CD or £25 on download, rising to £35 on CD and £30 on download at general release.

Transcribed from James' interview featured on the Torchwood: The Death of Captain Jack audio story.

"I have been wondering when you guys would call and I remember, I was in bed with my wife, and she said 'You've gotta do some of these Torchwood radio shows,' and I said, 'You know what? I've been thinking the same thing. I'm gonna call Steve, my manager, and just see what's possible.'

I remember I was in London touring, with my band, Ghost of the Robot, and we couldn't get the tour manager to come out to dinner, Lisa Powers. She said that she wouldn't leave her hotel room because Doctor Who was on, and it was the second season premiere and she wouldn't miss it for anything. So she said, 'If you want to have dinner with me, we can have room service in my room,' and so we did, and we watched Doctor Who, and within 15 minutes, I was in love, and I called my manager and asked him to ask Russell [T. Davies] if I could come on the show. Russell said 'No. He can't come on Doctor Who, but we do have a spin-off and there's a character we've been trying to cast and I think that he would be right for it.' And they sent me the script, and I was just, 'Holy God, this is amazing,' and just fell in love with it immediately.

I'm used to being the person on set with an annoying amount of energy. When everyone else is tired, I'm like 'Hey guys! Isn't this fun?! Come on!' and I remember John [Barrowman] just buried me, and he was just a tornado of energy [laughs] and I thought 'Oh my God, I can't keep up with this man.' And everyone, man, what a great cast and what a great group of people; just having fun, with the scripts. And when everyone is willing to have fun, it's a lot easier to have fun myself.

It has been absolutely delightful. I was surprised that I was in it that much. [laughs] When I read the script I was like, 'Oh, this is gonna be easy, I'll be in a few scenes like in the show,' but I was just all the way through it and I was very happily surprised. I've loved this character since I first played him and I often play him in my head, but he's dangerous to let out in to the world. [laughs]

Oh, I missed Cardiff. I missed the rain. Yeah, in England you have this wonderful stuff that falls from the sky, for free, this water that comes down, and we just don't have that in Los Angeles, or in California much at all. And there's musicians in Cardiff. But, this is a lot easier, you know, we get to sit down.

I remember when Russell, we had dinner together when I came to Cardiff first, and he said that, that 'Torchwood is my Buffy,' and I didn't know quite what he meant by that, at first, but I think what he meant was, that Torchwood is a subversive show, just like Buffy was. Buffy was subverting the lie that women can't hit, that they can't fight back or defend themselves, and I think that Torchwood was subverting the lie that an LGTB person can't be a hero. And I think that we offended all the right people with Torchwood. So happy about that. I remember I was doing a BBC interview, while we were filming, and it was raining and we were in the SUV and the guy from the BBC said, [British accent] 'So what you think about the homophobic backlash against Torchwood?' and he pushed the microphone in my face, and I said, 'We have a backlash? We have a back- We have a backlash! Yay!' And I was over the moon. So I've loved Torchwood from the very beginning."
