Back in the day, James Marsters' old official websites used to post a monthly Q&A session with James, & I'm reposting those Q&As every week for a bit of fun (& nostalgia)! Only a couple if these babies left to post! Enjoy this week's Q&A from January 2011:

January 2011

If you were forced to, who would you want to trade places with for 24 hours?
(Laughs.) Nobody, nobody. I wouldn’t trade places with one human being for one second.

Having run your own theater, you’ve come up against the conflict of arts promotion vs financial viability. Having had to promote both agendas at once, which do you feel drives the creative spirit at the end of the day?
They must be the same. Moliere and Shakespeare realized this. You have to grab the audience by the throat and if you have something important to say, once you have them by the throat they’ll listen. But they have to be your slaves – there should be zero difference between a theme that is important and true and that which is commercially viable. One should lead to the other. A great artist can take a great theme, whether it’s pain or wisdom or whatever and they make it so exciting to watch, that is art. I remember trying to sell “Life is a Dream” a 500 year old play in verse from Spain and nobody knew it, but it’s better than Hamlet. And I sold it as a sex romp. I got full houses on a 500 year old play.

Was there a teacher or teachers that made a difference in your life?
Mrs. Barr. She was my senior English teacher in high school and she was BRUTAL about teaching us the language. She made us learn words and to this day I have a good command of the language because of all the words that she taught me. There was an 8th grade math teacher who was a total hippie. He had long hair and a beard and I thought he was the coolest guy on earth. I was not good in math but he made it fun. My high school chemistry teacher was the first person I’d met who was part of the actor’s union and he took pity on me. By that time I was getting known as an interesting young actor and he forgave me my weakness in science and sheperded me through chemistry. Mr. Stewart was his name.

What talent do you wish you had?
Wow…uhm. Fencing! (laughs) I don’t know. I have all the talents I want. I’m blessed.

If Capt. John Hart and Spike ever crossed paths, what do you think the outcome would be?
Wild homosexual sex! Because Spike hasn’t had homosexual sex in like 100 years, and Captain John is so sexy, you know?

In P.S. I Love You, where she’s contemplating on what kind of career she should go into, one of her choices was being a ‘Vampire Slayer’, was that added in there because you were on Buffy or did it have nothing to do with you being on the show?
(Laughs) It had zero to do with my being there. I was just along for the ride on that one. I was just taking notes.

Favorites:

Star Trek character? Spock! I told Joss when I got on Buffy that I wanted to be the Spock of Buffy. There’s only one letter of difference, man! I wanted to be the side character that is interesting, and takes the theme and turns it on its head so you can re-examine it from a different angle.

Album from your youth? Hmmm…Tom Petty – Damn the Torpedoes.

Back in the day, James Marsters' old official websites used to post a monthly Q&A session with James, & I'm reposting those Q&As every week for a bit of fun (& nostalgia)! (Skipped last week's due to my retweeting all of your fave James pics to help celebrate James' birthday; check them out here & here) Enjoy this week's Q&A from March 2010:

March 2010

What song did you start to play in the deleted scene for P.S. I Love You? Everyone loves that scene.
Oh, that was Too Fast, that I wrote. I had to use something that I wrote so they didn’t have to deal with any copyrights.

Should the individual or society be of primary importance?
Uh, well society exists to give succor to the individual. There’s no reason for society if it doesn’t serve the individual, so the individual does come first. I’m an American, though, so I’m gonna say that. If I was Chinese, I might tell you the opposite.

Are you a good swimmer?
I’m a very good swimmer. I was trained at the YMCA in Modesto to the level of “Shark”, which is just below lifeguard.

What do you think of Joss Whedon’s comment that “Buffy was in love with Spike the moment their hands clasped” in the finale?
Yeah, I believe that. Only then was he a true hero, only then did he truly sacrifice himself for other people and only then did he truly deserve her.

Food you hated as a child, but came to like as an adult?
Nothing. I still hate lima beans, I still hate liver, and I still hate brussel sprouts.

As an actor, you have died onstage and onscreen several times. Which were your most and least favorite deaths to perform and why?
My least favorite was on Lie to Me because I wanted more dialogue with Tim Roth and Jennifer Beals. My favorite was my first death on Smallville because I knew it was meaningless. Dying isn’t good.

Favorites:
Decade? My favorite decade? Right now!!
Amusement park ride? Rollercoaster- an old-fashioned wooden roller coaster.
James Bond? I would have said Sean Connery until Craig. But now it’s Daniel Craig. Yeah. He’s the dirtiest, he’s a real killer. You really would not want to have dinner with that guy. I love it – he’s so nasty!

Back in the day, James Marsters' old official websites used to post a monthly Q&A session with James, & I'm reposting those Q&As every week for a bit of fun (& nostalgia)! Enjoy this week's Q&A from February 2009:

February 2009

Are you obsessive about your passions or can you turn them off at will?
I have never even thought of turning a passion off. I have always chased after them. Dante would say that’s a mistake.

Is there any movie genre you would really rather not–or even hate–to watch?
Any movie that ends with a prom!

Being a musician and working with Harry Connick, Jr. on the set of P.S. I Love You, did you two have a chance to jam or talk music?
Yes, we did get to talk music and his love for early jazz and bebop.

If you could have the ability to read minds, whose mind would you like to read and why?
Uhmmm. I would choose not to! (laughs) I don’t know if any of us are mature enough to handle the brutal honesty of what’s inside other people’s heads.

How important is it for there to be chemistry between two actors? Did you ever have to perform opposite someone you truly did not like or get along with off-screen?
For me, chemistry is trust. If you have trust you can risk together. It’s like a partnership and it means you can have fun together while jumping off a mountain. I have not always been able to get good trust with an acting partner. One of the best was Juliet Landau; I always felt safe with her. Chemistry has nothing to do with physical attraction – that often gets in the way.

Back in the day, James Marsters' old official websites used to post a monthly Q&A session with James, & I'm reposting those Q&As every week for a bit of fun (& nostalgia)! Enjoy this week's Q&A from April 2008:

APRIL 2008

Are you more of a city person or a country (nature) person?
I love both and refuse to choose. I love to relax in the country and work in the city.

Who do you see when you watch Buffy, James or Spike? Do you see just Spike so you can enjoy the show, or do you see yourself and judge your acting?
I see Spike and I’m happy when my acting is simple – that is when Spike is most potent, when the words come out.

Name two random things you would never do and two things you hope to do.
I’d never run a marathon or eat squid. I hope to act with Meryl Streep and buy a hybrid. You know, actually I might eat squid!

Who was the actor/actress that you felt made you come out fully in your acting even more than before, giving as good as you got or better, and why do you think that is?
Too many people to name; Kathy Bates, Lisa Kudrow, Hilary Swank and Holly Hunter for all the obvious reasons.

Favorites:
NFL Team - The Bears
Character you’ve played, other than Spike – Segismundo from “Life is a Dream” by Calderon at the Bailiwick Theatre in Chicago.

——
Due to a busy Mr. Marsters, this month’s Q&A is shorter than normal sessions. However, we should definitely be back to a fuller session next month.
