In Season 2 of MARVEL’S RUNAWAYS, now streaming in its entirety on Hulu, the title characters have grown into their group moniker. Teenagers Alex Wilder (Rhenzy Feliz), Chase Stein (Gregg Sulkin), Gert Yorkes (Ariela Barer), Karolina Dean (Virginia Gardner), Molly Hernandez (Allegra Acosta), and Nico Minoru (Lyrica Okano) all have superpowers and/or extraordinary skills. Once alienated from each other, they’ve bonded upon discovering that Pride, the organization all of their parents are involved in, is evil and has a sinister agenda. The runaways have fled their privileged homes and are now hiding out in a mansion buried under Griffith Park in Los Angeles.

Not surprisingly, most of the runaways’ parents are freaking out and trying to find their offspring at the beginning of Season 2. Not so Victor Stein, played by James Marsters, Chase’s brilliant but abusive father. In Season 1, Victor had a brain tumor. This was cured by Pride founder Jonah (Julian McMahon). The cure made Victor at first extremely mellow, then extremely aggressive. Victor was finally shot by his wife Janet (Ever Carradine) to stop him from possibly killing Chase. So Victor starts Season 2 in a coma.

One major hint that Victor will come out of the coma at some point is the fact that Marsters is on the Pride headquarters set for a RUNAWAYS Q&A session. The actor has had many roles in films and television, but he’s perhaps still best known for his run as the vampire Spike in BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and ANGEL.

James Marsters: "Buffy against vampires has always been more popular outside the United States"

Spike indulges in his vampire years. Meet.

Invited this weekend of the Paris Manga Sci-Fi Show with his former colleagues of Buffy against vampires (Anthony Head and Amber Benson), James Marsters returns for Première on the range this cult series, the role of Spike and the Dragonball Evolution disaster , in which he played Piccolo.

Whatever you do, we always bring you back to Buffy against the vampires and the character of Spike. But it's also because you cultivate this link, right?
Absolutely, because Buffy is a series that I can be proud of. We managed to get the idea that violence does not solve all the problems and that women can kick ass! At the time, I was producing and performing in Seattle and Chicago. I had just had my son and I was coming to Los Angeles just to earn money. The theater is great fun, but you win almost nothing. So I decided to sell myself on TV (Laughs.)

You had the feeling of selling yourself?
Oh yeah, completely! I had no illusions. It was the late 1990s and television was not as interesting as it is today, at least from my point of view. I remember telling my agent that I was not there to receive awards since I had them already at the theater. I had nothing to prove and I did not respect the people of this environment anyway (Laughs.) I was there for the dough! To buy diapers! And suddenly, I found myself in a series that spread a subversive message to more people than I could have imagined. We talked about strong subjects, like the difficulty of being homosexual during adolescence. It's more common on TV today, but we were in the first to talk about it. I think that'

Runaways – Parents Roundtable

By  |

Ever Carradine and James Marsters

Q) Thoughts about the potential Buffy reboot that’s been circling?

James: I like the idea. I like the idea of a new slayer in the new universe who’s not Buffy. A whole new story. I think the fact Joss [Whedon] is involved means it’s gonna be good. Other than that, I don’t know what’s going on. [laughs] I’m busy but very happy that “Don’t give up” is the theme of that show at the end of the day. I would like for that theme to keep getting played.

Q) Where do you pick up in season two?

Ever: We pick up almost exactly where we left off. Like 24 hours. It’s pretty quick.

James: The was the big shock of this season–that they had constructed a new box you could actually see me in. I was like, “Oh, I’m gonna have to work.”

James Marsters Likes the Idea of a Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot

While fans may have had mixed reactions to the news that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was in the works, not everyone shares that hesitation. James Marsters, who played the wonderfully chaotic vampire Spike in the original series, actually sounds pretty psyched about it!

"I like the idea of making a new slayer in that universe that's not Buffy, whole new deal," Marsters recently told a small group of reporters at an event for his Hulu series Marvel's Runaways. "I think Joss [Whedon] being involved means it's going to be good... But I'm very happy that that theme of "don't give up" [which] basically is, I think, the theme of the show at the end of the day, I'm glad for that theme to keep getting played."

Hollywood, CA -- As tortured genius Victor Stein on Hulu’s Marvel’s Runaways, James Marsters, on the surface, is not the perfect father.  Like the rest of the runaways’ parental units, Stein lied to his son Chase (Gregg Sulkin) about being an evil so-and-so; the reason all the runaways banded together in Season 1 to, well, run away. While the character appeared to receive his comeuppance at the end of the first season he does live, albeit in suspended animation, to appear in Season 2 which is currently in production and due to start streaming later in the year.  Fans of the series will agree -- he’s simply a bad dad -- yet Marsters has his own view on the character’s parenting style.  “I would argue that Victor is not a bad dad,” he told MediaVillage during a recent set visit.  “He’s not the perfect dad, and he may be a little too hard on his son -- maybe a lot too hard -- but it’s better than being too easy on a genius kid.
